What To Expect

In determining your child's needs, you want your child to feel safe and comfortable above all. We feel the same, and we strive to adhere rigidly to a set of principles that guarantees the least amount of stress for you and your child.

At the Advancement Centre, you'll meet with one of our professional psychologists who has had extensive experience working with children and learning difficulties, as well as determining and providing assistance for specific cases, such as dyslexia and other educational needs.

Preparing your child: You do not need to prepare your child for the assessment, apart from letting them know they will be taking part in a number of activities aimed at finding out about how they think and learn, what they are good at, etc.

When you arrive for your appointment with your psychologist at our facilities, there are some things you may want to keep in mind in order to assure your visit is both productive and comfortable. Things like the child's clothing being comfortable, as well as anything the child may require to quietly occupy their time before seeing our educational expert, or after the session while we are discussing the results with you.

Any school reports could also prove useful, in order to solidify your specific concerns about your child's academic performance, as well as to give us a better understanding of your particular situation. Perhaps even more helpful would be a few examples of the child's work, whether writing, a craft, a painting, and, of course, schoolwork that demonstrates your concern. In addition, if you have received any assessments in the past from another facility like the Advancement Centre, even if your disagree with the content of the report, can assist in our own assessment by helping to track the development of your child over time in regards to the severity of issues such as dyslexia. The more information you provide us with, the better we can understand and assist with your child's individual need.

In an effort to keep your child on track with the appointment, without interrupting his or her regular schedule too much, we encourage you to bring food or drink if you deem it appropriate, as it will be allowed in our offices. Depending on your appointment and the needs of your child, some testing and assessments may take longer than others, and it may be convenient for you to bring food and drink for your child, although there are shops nearby.

We know that your child's future is important to you, so we strive to give you the best possible experience we can while also saving you time by grouping as much as we can of the testing process into one location and one day, without burdening your child with unnecessary or laborious testing for learning difficulties unrelated to dyslexia.

We hope you'll consider the Advancement Centre and our child and educational specialist psychologists for your child's future. We look forward to your visit.
